Popular pianist and hit-maker for long time denied all synchronization requests and refused to adapt his  music for commercial campaigns. Although the fans are not usually thrilled with usage of their favorite songs in commercial ads, Billy Joel’s songs now make a soundtrack of commercial ads for Gap, Bank of America and New York tourist board, and they thus complement the brand. In the past 18 months, there is 127 licensed usage of his songs only in the United States. Except that, as Joel explains, “the songs only stood for nothing and gathering dust”, in times of crisis and vertiginous decline in sales of music, it is clear that any income is welcome.

Trying to reach new generations, Joel does a lot creativity tours, appears in the TV series and films, all in order to bring closer the context of his music, which allows to better enjoy in it. He hopes that such effect might have and with appearing in commercials, which confirms the song “Piano Man”, which after licensing for a commercial for the Dutch railways, reappeared to the current list of hits in that country.
